Quality Control for Custom Hardware: From Dimensional Inspection to RoHS and REACH Compliance

Quality Control Starts Before Production

Custom metal and plastic components are generally manufactured according to customer drawings and specifications, so quality requirements vary from project to project.

Some products require tight dimensional or positional control, while others may require verification of hardness, surface finish, assembly, or functional performance. Automotive, industrial, electronic, and other applications may also require material certificates, inspection reports, or compliance documentation.

When these requirements are not identified until production is complete, additional inspection, documentation, or even reproduction may be required.

A more effective quality process therefore begins during quotation and engineering review.

Start with Clear Drawings and Quality Requirements

Before production, important requirements should be clearly identified, including:

  • Material and material grade
  • Dimensions and tolerances
  • Critical dimensions
  • Hardness or heat-treatment requirements
  • Surface finish and coating thickness
  • Appearance standards
  • Functional and assembly requirements
  • Test methods
  • Sampling requirements
  • Required quality and compliance documents

If the customer uses a specific inspection standard or report format, providing it during the quotation stage helps determine the required measuring equipment, fixtures, external testing, documentation work, cost, and lead time.

Why Is First-Article Inspection Important?

After a new production run begins, first-article inspection can be used to verify that actual manufacturing results match the approved drawing and process settings.

Depending on the component, this may include dimensions, hole locations, angles, appearance, assembly fit, and basic functionality.

When a more complete FAI (First Article Inspection) is required, measured results may need to be recorded against individual drawing characteristics together with supporting material or process documentation.

Not every product requires the same level of FAI, so the scope should be determined according to customer requirements and product risk.

Mass Production Requires More Than Final Inspection

Even after an acceptable first article is produced, materials, equipment, tooling, and manufacturing conditions can change during mass production.

In-process inspection may therefore be used to verify that critical dimensions and appearance remain within the required range.

For stamped components, tooling wear may affect dimensions or burr conditions. CNC-machined parts may require monitoring of tool wear and machined dimensions. Assemblies may also require checks for fit and functional consistency.

Identifying issues during production is generally more efficient than sorting a completed production batch.

What Types of Inspection May Be Required?

Inspection requirements vary according to the product and manufacturing process.

Common checks for custom hardware may include dimensions and tolerances, hole positions, angles, flatness, appearance, material, hardness, coating thickness, assembly fit, and functional performance.

Safety buckles, brackets, and load-bearing components may also require tensile, load, durability, or other functional testing according to customer specifications.

When special equipment or a designated test standard is required, responsibility for testing should be confirmed during development.

Material and Surface-Treatment Documents Should Be Confirmed Early

Some customers require supporting documentation in addition to conforming parts.

Depending on the project, requested documents may include material certificates, chemical or mechanical-property data, hardness or heat-treatment reports, plating or surface-treatment certificates, coating-thickness data, salt-spray test reports, dimensional inspection reports, and third-party test results.

Availability depends on the material source, process supplier, traceability requirements, and customer-specified format.

Requirements such as heat-number traceability, special report formats, or third-party certification should therefore be confirmed before the order is placed.

RoHS and REACH Address Different Requirements

RoHS and REACH are often requested together in international sourcing, but they do not serve the same regulatory purpose.

EU RoHS rules restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, so applicability depends on the final product and target market.

Under REACH, the European Chemicals Agency maintains the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), which means customers requesting REACH documentation should also specify the applicable requirements and substance scope.

For custom components, the required documentation should therefore be confirmed according to the target market, customer specification, material, and manufacturing process.

PFAS Requirements Need a Clearly Defined Scope

PFAS-related requirements continue to develop and may vary according to country, market, product type, and customer specification.

A broad PFAS restriction proposal remains under evaluation in Europe, making it particularly important to clarify what a customer means when requesting “PFAS Free” documentation.

The applicable regulation, substance scope, and required supporting documents should be identified before a compliance statement is issued.

This can be especially important for plastics, coatings, lubricants, adhesives, surface treatments, and other materials within the supply chain.

Compliance Requirements Should Be Raised During Quotation

For projects involving RoHS, REACH, PFAS, Prop 65, TSCA, EU POPs, or other customer-specified requirements, customers are encouraged to provide the target market, applicable regulation or customer specification, document revision, restricted-substance list, required declaration format, third-party testing requirements, and batch-traceability requirements during quotation.

Some documentation must be obtained from raw-material, plating, plastic, or other process suppliers, while other requirements may require additional laboratory testing.

Early confirmation reduces the risk of discovering documentation gaps after production has been completed.

Quality control for custom components is not a single final inspection. It combines drawing review, material control, manufacturing processes, measurement, testing, and documentation.
